What is it?

Dengue fever (also called Dengue virus) is a disease caused by a virus carried by mosquitoes. It is an illness lookalike of severe flu. Dengue is lethal in Pakistan nowadays.

Between Jan and Nov 2021, 48,906 cases including 183 deaths (fatality ratio: 0.4%) have been reported from four provinces including the FATAs plus Islamabad Capital Territory, Azad Jammu Kashmir almost all over Pakistan.

Spread/Transmission

Dengue is not transmitted directly from person to person. It is only transmitted by mosquitoes.

Symptoms

In dengue fever, you may have:

1-Fever

2-Headache

3-Pain behind the eyes

4-Nausea and vomiting

5-Muscle and joint pain

6-Bleeding nose or gums

7-Rash

8-Swollen glands

9-Fatigue (feeling very tired)

These symptoms can be mild or may get severe. They usually appear between 3 to 14 days after the mosquito bite, and usually last for between 2 to 7 days.

There is no vaccine or any specific medicine to treat dengue. People who have dengue fever should rest, drink plenty of fluids (water and juices) and reduce the fever using paracetamol etc.

Severe dengue symptoms

Severe case (also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever) has potential of near death or lethal complication, affect mostly children. Preventing from even occurring, diagnosing on time and being treated by professional increases survival.

Some people with past dengue affection can be lead to severe dengue case.

People who have severe dengue feel really unwell with additional symptoms such as:

1-Stomach pain

2-Nose bleeds and bleeding gums

3-Bruising to minor bumps

4-Continuous vomiting or poo with blood in it

5-Breathing difficulties

6-Restlessness

7-Confusion

8-Cold and clammy skin

It can be deadly as this is really serious illness.

Can it be prevented?

Surely! If right controls taken, it can be prevented before infection and spreading. For your note, no medicine is available to treat dengue so far.

DIY (You can also do it yourself)

Dry out standing and open water. Empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out items that hold water, such as tires, planters, buckets, flowerpots, toys, birdbaths, pools, or trash containers. Check inside and outside your home. Mosquitoes lay eggs near water.
